Buckingham Fountain, Chicago, IL, 2006

This fountain is a spectacular landmark..a must see. One of the largest fountains in the world, the Buckingham Fountain measures 280 ft in diameter. It features 134 jets powered by 3 pumps, its central jet pushes water up to 46m/150ft high. The Fountain's water capacity is 1.5 million gallons. The fountain's hourly 20 minute water display is best seen at dusk when it is beautifully animated with a now computerized choreography of color spotlights . Kate Buckingham envisioned a fountain whose effect was that of "soft moonlight." She worked many nights with technicians, testing the various colors of the glass filters and currents to produce an ethereal, mystical aura. My favorite fountain is now undergoing renovations this fall. Hopefully it will be back in action next summer so I can visit it again.
